NB awards construction contract for main phase of new Fredericton justice building

The Government of New Brunswick announced that the contract to complete construction of the new Fredericton justice building has been awarded to Bird Construction.

The construction management firm will oversee the third and final phase of the project beginning this spring.

“We are excited to announce the next phase of this project, which incorporates a different delivery model for our department,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Richard Ames. “The construction management services will be an integral part of developing this project for the Fredericton area.”

The project, under development on King Street between Regent and Carleton streets, was announced in 2021. Phases 1 and 2 involved site preparation, foundation work and structural steel; this work was completed last summer.

The final phase is expected to be done by spring of 2026.

Capital costs for the project are estimated at $60 million. Construction will be completed in 2025 through a multi-phased tender process. The initial tenders will complete site preparations, foundations, and structural steel, before moving to the final building construction, commissioning, and fit-up.

The 110,000 square foot, six storey building will provide the space required to meet the needs of the Department of Justice and Public Safety and include many smart features such as cutting-edge video conferencing technology.

The new building will include an enhanced screening area, a Sheriff’s suite, and a secure holding area for persons attending court while in custody. There will be 10 courtrooms serving three levels of court – the New Brunswick Court of Appeal, the Court of Kings’s Bench and the Provincial Court.
