City of Pitt Meadows breaks ground on new autonomous RCMP detachment

The City of Pitt Meadows celebrated the start of construction of the new autonomous RCMP detachment with an official ground breaking ceremony.

“On behalf of City Council, we are pleased to witness construction begin on the new autonomous RCMP detachment,” said Mayor Nicole MacDonald. “It is important that Pitt Meadows has an RCMP detachment that is tailored to our community’s unique needs. We are proud to invest in the infrastructure necessary to enhance policing service levels and response times.”

The new 19,000 square foot detachment will provide the RCMP with the necessary amenities to operate an autonomous police service within the community, and will include a dedicated ground level volunteer/flex space as well as mass timber structural components in the lobby. The detachment will be built at 12486 Harris Road.

“This ground breaking marks a significant milestone towards the City transitioning to an independent RCMP model,” said CAO Mark Roberts. “The new detachment will enable a more effective police response to accommodate the evolving needs of our growing community.”

In 2021 after an extensive formal review and consultation, the City received approval from the Province of BC to transition out of the current shared RCMP model with Maple Ridge and towards an autonomous RCMP detachment.

Construction of the new autonomous RCMP detachment is expected to be complete by late 2025.
