Free our municipalities!

Unprecedented shock and awe stories keep on coming from south of the border. My wife and I watch, follow, discuss (and often get angry about) the same topics as you. Every day our newsfeeds are filled with more head-shaking headlines. Originally this column was going to meme the new administration, take some informed guesses about U.S. infrastructure plans, and try to crystal ball the Canadian impact, but this is a strange story which continues to unfold so we’ll wait for more ‘alternative facts’ before we write that one. Instead, I’d like to give [...]

Over the course of the next several weeks, ReNew Canada will be collecting information from each of the candidates in the Conservative Leadership race regarding their policy or position on infrastructure spending in Canada. We have emailed a request to all 14 of the campaigns in an effort to collect the information. All 14 were given the exact same request, which asked for “1-2 paragraphs that explain (candidate name here) position or policy on infrastructure spending.” As we receive the information, this space will become a running document with [...]

Three significant moments in the history of the City of Vancouver have led to the community’s drive to make walking, cycling, and transit priority modes of transportation. The result is the city achieving its goal of 50 per cent sustainable mode share, but in 2016 instead of 2020. A new video from STREETFILMS describes the important events that have led the city down this path, and the benefits it has created both for those who live in the community, and those who visit the community. Surveying the Social Costs of Delays

As a quantity surveyor who has been working in Ottawa for 19 years, I can say I was more than pleased when Justin Trudeau promised to raise the federal budget for infrastructure to $125 billion over the next 10 years. This is a major commitment, and we haven’t seen this kind of money spent on infrastructure since the 1960s. But to be honest, this scale of investment has been needed for 15 years. Quantity surveyors are the cost consultants for the construction industry, so for infrastructure projects, one of our roles is to determine how the government [...]
