In a video that went viral last week, a Russian pedestrian is seen crossing over a car that stopped abruptly on a crosswalk. Without surprise, there’s a verbal confrontation afterward (without audio). YouTuber Alexander Egorychev caught the action and posted it online:
According to the Halifax Regional Municipality, “Drivers must yield the right of way to pedestrians who are lawfully within a crosswalk.” the driver may have been in the wrong, was this the right action to take?

The World Health Organization (WHO) released its latest Global Status Report on Road Safety 2013 (the first since 2009), and while Canada fared better than many of less privileged countries that were audited, there is still significant room for improvement.

The Joint Public Advisory Committee (JPAC) of the Commission for Environmental Cooperation has issued a series of practical recommendations to the top environment officials of Canada, Mexico, and the United States to do more to move North America toward a truly sustainable energy economy. Since its inception in 2007, the annual Jane's Walk has created an opportunity for people to engage in city planning. Over the course of one weekend (May 4 to 5, 2013), citizens in urban areas around the world will lead more than 600 walking tours in their own communities.

The Canadian Electricity Association (CEA) is looking to strengthen ties between Canada and the United States. A new interactive website is attempting to show businesses, community leaders, and water infrastructure stakeholders the benefit of investing in water infrastructure and sustainable water systems.
The National Association of Water Companies (NWAC) and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce have launched waterisyourbusiness.org as part of a public awareness campaign. According to the UN-accredited World Energy Council’s (WEC) global ranking of energy sustainability performance, over 90 countries are a long way from achieving fully sustainable energy systems.
The 2012 Energy Sustainability Index, published within the WEC’s 2012 World Energy Trilemma report, entitled Time to get real – the case for sustainable energy policy, found that most countries have not managed to balance trade-offs in energy security, social equity and environmental impact mitigation.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, exports of American coal to Canada have declined in recent years, due mostly to Canadian policy.
Canada has reduced its coal-fired electric generation, resulting in a fairly steep decline in coal trade with the United States. This is a direct result of Canadian federal and provincial policies to move away from coal-fired generation.
