In a video that went viral last week, a Russian pedestrian is seen crossing over a car that stopped abruptly on a crosswalk. Without surprise, there’s a verbal confrontation afterward (without audio). YouTuber Alexander Egorychev caught the action and posted it online:
According to the Halifax Regional Municipality, “Drivers must yield the right of way to pedestrians who are lawfully within a crosswalk.” the driver may have been in the wrong, was this the right action to take?

The World Health Organization (WHO) released its latest Global Status Report on Road Safety 2013 (the first since 2009), and while Canada fared better than many of less privileged countries that were audited, there is still significant room for improvement.
While Canada performs relatively well in most areas of the report and mirrors the overall worldwide trend of decreasing road deaths, there are areas of concern for those trying to make the nation’s roads safer. In particular, pedestrian and cyclist safety has come under scrutiny since the report’s [...]

Since its inception in 2007, the annual Jane's Walk has created an opportunity for people to engage in city planning. Over the course of one weekend (May 4 to 5, 2013), citizens in urban areas around the world will lead more than 600 walking tours in their own communities.
Jane's Walk honours the legacy and ideas of urban activist and writer Jane Jacobs, who championed the interests of local residents at a time when scale models and grand visions of the future removed designers from the experience of the city by foot. Jane's Walk often takes Jacobs' ideas [...]

The Canadian Electricity Association (CEA) is looking to strengthen ties between Canada and the United States. With electricity systems and markets already highly integrated between the two countries, the CEA released a white paper, The Integrated Electric Grid: Maximizing Benefits in an Evolving Landscape (download PDF), that proposes a number of policy recommendations for maintaining a healthy relationship. The paper details the intricacies of the Canada-U.S. power-sharing system, stating that “electricity plays an integral role in the robust Canada-U.S [...]

"Soil is not a waste, it's a resource," said Waterloo's Naz Richie at this morning's Soils Management Workshop. Hosted by the Consulate General of the Netherlands, the event's focus was building a blueprint for a soil bank.
The Netherlands have always been a model for Canada when it comes to the use of certain environmental technologies, especially brownfield remediation. In fact, during a 2007 business mission to the Netherlands in which ReNew Canada participated, there was a heavy focus on how Canada—Ontario, in particular—could benefit from a technology [...]

Certain macroeconomic and geopolitical issues are blocking transition in the world energy sector, say energy leaders. What's keeping these leaders awake at night? The 2013 World Energy Issues Monitor, published by the World Energy Council (WEC), identifies key issues impeding the shift toward sustainable use and supply of energy: the global recession, unpredictable energy prices, political instability in the Middle East-North African region, and uncertainty about future climate frameworks. Dr. Chirstoph Frei, secretary general of the WEC, calls them “insomnia [...]

According to the UN-accredited World Energy Council’s (WEC) global ranking of energy sustainability performance, over 90 countries are a long way from achieving fully sustainable energy systems.
The 2012 Energy Sustainability Index, published within the WEC’s 2012 World Energy Trilemma report, entitled Time to get real – the case for sustainable energy policy, found that most countries have not managed to balance trade-offs in energy security, social equity and environmental impact mitigation.
The index reveals that countries at various stages [...]

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, exports of American coal to Canada have declined in recent years, due mostly to Canadian policy.
Canada has reduced its coal-fired electric generation, resulting in a fairly steep decline in coal trade with the United States. This is a direct result of Canadian federal and provincial policies to move away from coal-fired generation. Canada plans to enforce a strict performance standard for all coal-fired units starting in 2015. The addition of the new regulations will likely encourage utilities [...]
