Political leaders say no to HST hike for infrastructure

Posted on August 16, 2017

One day after Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) president Lynn Dollin recommended a one per cent hike in the HST to help pay for municipal infrastructure, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne has stated that she does not support the idea.

Speaking at AMO’s annual conference, held this year at the Shaw Centre in Ottawa, the premier did not wait for the question to be asked, instead addressing the issue in her opening remarks.

“We’re not going to do that,” Wynne stated in reference to raising the HST. “We are going to continue to have a discusson with you, as we began last year, about what is next; what are the things that we need to be tackling next. But right now, when we’re trying to take costs off people’s monthly bills, […] raising the prpvincial portion of the HST would actually fly in the face of that.”

Ontario PC leader Patrick Brown and Ontario NDP leader Andrea Horwath, speaking at the same event, also stated that they would not be supportive of an increase to the HST to support local infrastructure needs. Both stated the need to change current funding mechanisms in order to ensure that municipal infrastructure funding needs are met.
