NB Power, TransAlta agree to add capacity at Kent Hills

Posted on June 21, 2017

NB Power and TransAlta, a subsidiary of TransAlta Renewables Inc., have agreed to add 17.25 MW of wind-generating capacity at its existing Kent Hills site.

The existing wind farm accounts for 150 MW of capacity and consists of two separate projects. This planned project is known as Kent Hills 3. Subject to regulatory approvals and the completion of a successful engagement process with First Nations and other stakeholders, it is expected to begin operation in late 2018.

It will supply additional generation and make up for lower-than-anticipated energy production at the existing wind farm. The energy from the site is being sold to NB Power at competitive market rates.

The Kent Hills wind farm began commercial operation in December 2008. Natural Forces Technologies Inc., a wind-energy developer based in Atlantic Canada, co-developed and co-owns the wind farm with TransAlta. The second Kent Hills wind project began commercial operation in November 2010.

The addition of Kent Hills 3 has the potential to facilitate other business development opportunities in the green energy export sector.
