Money dedicated to design second highway out of Fort McMurray

Posted on May 8, 2017

Following an ongoing feasibility study for a second highway in and out of Fort McMurray, the provincial government has announced $5 million for the design of the route.

According to an article from the CBC, the province began the study in December to analyze the financial and environmental issues that may emerge with the creation of the new highway.

Last year’s wildfire caused the city’s population of 88,000 to use just one highway to escape the flames, causing a traffic nightmare on Highway 63. The new highway, one that could link Fort McKay, multiple oilsands’ sites and Fort McMurray to Highway 881.

The Municipality of Wood Buffalo has already put forward a basic concept for the route of the ‘East Clearwater Highway’, which it has estimated will cost in the area of $1.5 billion when including a proposed Highway 686 East.
