London moving forward with bus rapid transit

Posted on May 17, 2017

The City of London is moving forward with a plan for a $440-million bus rapid transit (BRT) system.

According to an article from the London Free Press, the finalized routes for the BRT would provide the city with access along major corridors in all directions, with access to the city core, Western University, Fanshawe College, and Victoria Hospital.

One of the major sticking points had been the need to address an alternative route through a freight rail corridor, which runs just north of the downtown. However, an original plan for an underground tunnel to bypass the rail crossing was pulled by staff, as the 0.9-kilometre tunnel would have added an estimated $220 million to the project cost.

The current iteration of the project is a scaled-back version of the original proposal, an $880-million plan that included a combination of rail and bus service.

The municipality is prepared to commit $130 million to help fund the project, with the rest being requested from both the provincial and federal government.

A formal council vote on the project will take place on Tuesday, May 23.
