Conservatives unveil shadow cabinet

Posted on August 31, 2017

Federal Conservative leader Andrew Scheer has unveiled his shadow cabinet, assigning Michael Chong with the task of watching over the infrastructure portfolio.

Chong is the Member of Parliament for the riding of Wellington-Halton Hills, located just west of the Greater Toronto Area. Chong was first elected to the riding in 2004 by just over 2,300 votes. Chong also ran for the party leadership this past year, finishing fifth out of the fourteen candidate field.

Saskatchewan MP Kelly Block has been named as the shadow minister for transport. Block was first elected in 2008 to represent the riding of Saskatoon—Rosetown—Biggar. In 2015, she was elected to the redrawn riding of Carlton Trail—Eagle Creek.

Maxime Bernier, who Scheer defeated on the final ballot during the 2017 leadership election, has been named as the shadow minister for innovation, science, and economic development.

In total, 37 Conservative MPs received assignments as part of the new shadow cabinet. The Conservatives currently have 96 MPs in total.
