Alberta announces infrastructure funding in Budget 2017

The 2017 Alberta budget included funding for new infrastructure projects, identified as high priorities by the province.

Budget 2017 included a Capital Plan that will invest $29.5 billion in infrastructure projects over four years. This includes:

  • $7.6 billion in municipal infrastructure support, including $4.8 billion under the Municipal Sustainability Initiative and $0.8 billion for GreenTRIP
  • $4.7 billion for capital maintenance and renewal to ensure public facilities will continue to serve the needs of Albertans
  • $3.8 billion for climate change and environmental sustainability
  • $4.5 billion for health infrastructure
  • $3.1 billion for roads and bridges
  • $2.6 billion for schools
  • $754 million for post-secondary capital projects
  • $100 million to support Albertans living on reserves who do not have reliable access to clean drinking water

A handful of large public sector infrastructure projects are specifically named in the budget, with funding allotments spread over the four-year plan. They include:

  • $270 million for the University of Calgary MacKimmie Complex and Professional Building
  • $1.19 billion for the Calgary Cancer Centre
  • $400 million for a new hospital in Edmonton
  • $353 million for the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital
  • $364 million for the Norwood Long Term Care Facility in Edmonton
  • $125 million for a new Public Safety and Emergency Services Provincial Operations Centre
