Gatineau raises taxes to tackle infrastructure

The Quebec municipality of Gatineau has announced that it will introduce a one per cent tax increase to help pay for the city’s growing infrastructure needs.

According to an article from the CBC, the city implemented an aggressive system of tax, fee, fine increases in order to manage significant infrastructure rehabilitation needs throughout Gatineau. Overall, the city will dedicate $95.6 million of $577 million 2017 budget to public works.

In addition to the new one per cent tax, municipal council also approved a 1.9 per cent property tax increase to help tackle the infrastructure issue while also striving to balance the books.
