NWT Awards $23.5M Contract for Women’s Correctional Facility

Posted on August 26, 2015

C.A.B. Construction Ltd. has been awarded the contract for $23.5 million for the design and construction of the new adult women’s correctional facility in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories.

The facility will be built on MacDougal Road next to the male correctional facility, and be able to hold 23 women. Northwest Territories Justice Minister David Ramsay said that by building the women’s facility on the same site as the men’s, “we will be able to realize efficiencies in food services, utilities, and administration.”

Design has begun, and construction is expected to start in spring of next year. The design will be planned to meet inmates’ needs, including spirituality and special programming areas, appropriate security requirements, and potential future expansion. The current Fort Smith women’s facility has been open since the 1990s. It has the goal of addressing the needs that led to their incarnation in a supportive and culturally appropriate environment.

While this current facility will be decommissioned and no longer used as a Corrections facility, the new facility will continue its legacy. “We look forward to the opening of this building in the spring of 2018 and continuing our partnership with the community,” Ramsay said.
