Canadian Regs Leave U.S. With Surplus of Coal

Posted on November 29, 2012

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, exports of American coal to Canada have declined in recent years, due mostly to Canadian policy.

Canada has reduced its coal-fired electric generation, resulting in a fairly steep decline in coal trade with the United States. This is a direct result of Canadian federal and provincial policies to move away from coal-fired generation. Canada plans to enforce a strict performance standard for all coal-fired units starting in 2015. The addition of the new regulations will likely encourage utilities to retire aged coal-fired generators and shift to lower- or non-emitting fuels.
