Transportation "Challenges"

Posted on September 23, 2011

Yesterday, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities Denis Lebel made his first address since being given this portfolio. He spoke to the Toronto Board of Trade about the challenges of developing effective transportation infrastructure in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

Lebel spoke at length about the importance of partnerships between all levels of government, as well as input from the private sector. He highlighted past federal investments in infrastructure, such as the billion dollars provided to extend the Spadina Subway line in Toronto. The minister also noted the importance of cross-border trade and the recent actions taken by the federal government to facilitate trade with the United States through increased cooperation at the border.

However, noticeably missing was any discussion of reducing congestion across the GTA or specific actions the government would take going forward to address the reported multi-billion dollar economic impact of congestion. And while the minister noted the importance of shaping Pearson International Airport into an international transit hub, he didn’t mention any specific actions, such as eliminating the rent airports pay to the federal government, to assist the airport in being cost competitive with other jurisdictions.
