First Wave of Broadband Canada Projects Announced

Posted on May 11, 2010

Tony Clement, Minister of Industry, has announced the first series of projects to receive conditional funding approval under the Broadband Canada: Connecting Rural Canadians program.

As part of Budget 2009, the federal government set aside $225 million over three years for Industry Canada to develop and implement a strategy to extend broadband coverage. Part of that strategy is Broadband Canada, a program to extend broadband service to unserved and underserved households.

The focus on households, as the ministry explains it, is based on the fact that communities with broadband access may still include individual households with no service. The federal government is contributing $76.7 million to 52 projects in nine provinces and territories, connecting about 169,000 households.

A list of companies and projects getting funding has been posted.
