TarBGoneA major$52 million contract to solidify and stabilize  sediment at the Sydney Tar Ponds has finally been awarded. We actually announced this in our May/June 2009 issue. But now it’s officially official. Nordly’s Environmental, a Cape Breton company owned by J&T van Zutphen Construction Inc. of Southwest Mabou and ECC of Marlborough, Massachusetts won the contract.

As described in our article, sediments will be solidified and contaminants will be stabilized. That’s why the approach is called solidification/stabilization. There’s been much public debate over whether this method, in which cement is mixed into contaminated material to trap hazardous contaminants, is the right choice for this remediation.
