Government of Saskatchewan Invests $36.2 Million in Highway and Bridge Infrastructure to Support Southeast Economy

Posted on September 18, 2008

On September 11, 2008, Saskatchewan Highways and Infrastructure Minister Wayne Elhard provided an update on the $36.2 million worth of highway and bridge construction projects taking place in southeast Saskatchewan in 2008-09.

The province will invest $17 million to rebuild Highway 8 from Storthoaks north to Fairlight, a total of 47.3 kilometres. This upgrade will be completed in three sections: Storthoaks to south of Redvers is complete; construction is ongoing from Redvers to 18.3 kilometres north; and construction on the section from 18.3 kilometres north to Fairlight will be carried over into next season with a final project completion goal of fall 2009.

The Highway 8 corridor provides an important north-south connection to Highways 13 and 48 in the region and a link to Highway 1 and 16 on Canada’s national highway system.

As well, 22 kilometres of Highway 48 is being rebuilt from the junction of Highway 9 to 5 kilometres east of Wawota, at a cost of $5.7 million. Work on this project is nearing completion for 2008 with a second seal coat expected to be completed in the summer of 2009.

In addition to these projects, there are six other projects that will be completed in southeast Saskatchewan.

“Highways and infrastructure investment is vitally important for the future growth of the Saskatchewan economy. One of the regions we’re focusing our efforts on is in southeast Saskatchewan where we’ve seen nearly $1 billion in new investment in the rapidly growing Bakken oil play over the past year alone. We want to be sure the residents of southeast Saskatchewan and the oil and gas industry have efficient and safe transportation links to keep their economy moving,” says Minister Wayne Elhard.
